Colorectal Polyps: Acupuncture as Treatment
Colorectal polyps are a condition characterized by the formation of small growths (polyps) on the inside of the colon or rectum. While most polyps are benign, some can develop into cancer over time. Conventional treatments often involve surgical removal of polyps or monitoring for any changes. As an alternative or supplement to traditional methods, acupuncture has shown potential as a useful approach to support the treatment of colorectal polyps.
Acupuncture as Treatment Method:
Acupuncture, a part of traditional Chinese medicine, involves the insertion of thin needles at specific points on the body to stimulate the body's natural healing process. In the case of colorectal polyps, acupuncture focuses on reducing inflammation in the intestinal lining, improving digestive function, and strengthening the immune system to promote healing and prevent further growth of polyps.
Research Findings:
Although there is limited research on the use of acupuncture for the treatment of colorectal polyps, some studies suggest potential benefits:
A study published in the "World Journal of Gastroenterology" in 2017 showed that acupuncture treatment could reduce the number and size of colorectal polyps in experimental animals.
Another study, conducted by Liu et al. and published in the "Journal of Traditional Chinese Medicine" in 2020, found similar results in humans, where acupuncture combined with conventional treatment resulted in a significant improvement in intestinal health and reduced polyp growth.
Perspectives:
Acupuncture appears to be a promising complementary treatment method for colorectal polyps, with research results indicating a potential reduction in the number and size of polyps as well as improvement in intestinal health.
